So this past week my mom and older sister Amanda came into town and we were BUSY cashing in Groupon after Groupon trying lots of new things. We had planned to go Paragliding for a celebration of our graduation way back in April but Utah still thought it was January and that we were supposed to be having below freezing temps still so...we had to push off celebrating to mid summer when my Mom was back in town. Go figure. Utah, sometimes I really don’t get you, despite your GORGEOUS scenery.
When Amanda and Mom first got here, they came to visit me at work, mostly to try the food after all I talked up the food served in our cafeteria. It was fun for me to show them around my stomping grounds and to show off our super cool cafeteria, I’m a weird dietitian I’m aware. Unfortunately I don’t think they loved the food as much as I did but they faked it good enough for me. Hehe. Then while Amanda was in town I figured that was the perfect time to see the new Xmen movie, with us being the only 2 girls left in the world that get excited to watch that series, it may have been my only chance. And of course, I could not let them leave the state without indulging in the heavenly
Nielson’s Frozen Custard. I think this food recommendation was better received, hard to disappoint a Curtis when you take them to get ice cream though. Man I love that place. Good thing Michelle and I have our high school (maybe even junior high?) boyfriends to smile at us and give us great service with each visit. Now if only they can get the smell to go away inside the restaurant and start to give us special privileges for being frequent customers, it’d be all that much better.
Anyways the real adventures started on Friday when we all got up early to head over to the point of the mountain to go paragliding! Amanda was nice enough to get up early and take pictures of us at the bottom as we landed so we’ve got every paraglider’s landing in that 30 minutes time frame captured, including us! J I was very grateful for the little seat thing that they give you to sit on during the ride. I am still a kid inside and was super nervous/uncomfortable about sitting in a random guy’s lap as we rode around the mountain. Now if it was our cute, single driver who took us up to the top of the mountain that may have been a different story…in that case seats may have been overrated. J My favorite part though was when my mom told her tandem flyer that she had bad knees so the taking off and landing may be an issue. He brought over his friend and the 3 of them made for the funniest image for me and Michelle as they took off. Sorry you missed out. Me and Michelle went right after each other so it was fun to wave and giggle as we passed each other flying through the air, not too often we get to do that. And hey, now we can check that off our bucket list, if we had one. The only thing to make it more cool would be if we jumped off a higher mountain, it was fun but not super exhilarating.

the helper struggled a bit - me and Michelle were dying laughing at this point :) |
After paragliding we took them to
House of Bread to use yet another Groupon. We didn’t love the cinnamon rolls but everything else was divine. I say everything because I’m pretty definitely sure we walked out with 20 dollars worth of bread. Love my fatty carbs. And so does my growing bum and waistline.
We went to the Utah Arts Festival that night and saw a lot of interesting things/people. I loved it, despite the heat that tried really hard to kill us. My favorite part was the performances by
Ballet West. AMAZING. I even signed up for emails so that I never miss a performance of theirs ever again. Man I miss ballet and performing sometimes. Pictures in front of the stage:
The next day we took off for
Moab for the rafting trip! It felt like the drive was forever long but maybe that's because me and Michelle had an extremely unnecessary detour on the way down to Provo. We don't want to talk about it. Anyways, so we arrived there that evening and ate at a halfway decent Mexican restaurant and then everyone got on their computers in the hotel room while I laid on the hotel bed wishing I got the cool kid memo about the designated 'computer time' and waited for bedtime to come. I guess not too different from a normal day. Just kidding...kind of. :)
The following morning we got up early and headed to the meeting spot to get on the bus that would take us to our rafting spot. Best part was that we were cashing in 2 groupons and were only supposed to have 1 groupon per family per trip, (weird huh? especially since we all live in different places for the most part!) So Mom and Michelle got to be friends and then me and Amanda, with each set arriving at different times and everything. Good thing I wrote down the same address as Michelle (who I also share a last name with) on the waiver. Common sense does not run through my blood. It ended up working out okay though.
Once we got to the bus we all got to be friends again and enjoyed our drive up through the Canyonlands on the school bus with our new friends that Mom made for us. We got split into groups and discussed what we do if/when we flip out or come into danger. That did not sit well with our group, flipping out was not on our agenda. Our guide called it the "f word..." f=falling out..ha ha ha. :) We ended up staying in the whole time but got splashed pretty good with the ICY cold water, (the main reason I really screamed.) I would definitely recommend it though...nice weather, fun ride, great company, good arm workout, nice tan. Can't go wrong with that combination. We got some really fun pictures from some sneaky photographers hiding out somewhere in our surroundings and other's taken by our guide, here's a sneak peak....go to the link below to see the rest:

the trek of shame back to our raft, the only raft that didn't manage to paddle strong enough through the eddy to dock by the other rafts and where lunch was served therefore we got to hike a bit...:) |

and this is the reason family that I could not see the supposed alligator in the rock formation - I was looking at just a portion of it! haha |
This post is too long I know. Sorry but we Curtis's are a bit on the long winded side, you probably already knew that though. Poor men in our lives. Anyways...afterwards we had to say bye to Amanda and Mom and just start planning our next trip which had better include our other favorite sister Lindsey! :)
